So we’ve been in the wedding business almost 6 years now and it is safe to say we have learned a few things along the way (and continue to learn every day!). Dawn and I would love to share some of our insights with you, let us know if you agree or have anything to add!

***One more plug before you continue….Administrative Professionals week is next week (April 22-28th), don’t forget to thank your staff with a beautiful flower arrangement or thoughtful dish garden! We have lots of options!***Ok, now continue on your way…

TOP 10 MISTAKES BRIDES MAKE…

10. Being too matchy matchy.

While we love a cohesive look and want the colors to blend perfectly, it is kinda impossible to find tiffany blue flowers. We suggest going with complimentary hues for contrast (think jade green and yellow like Kim did below) or shades of purple (instead of all eggplant flowers).

Photo credit: Jac and Jules Photography

Also involved with this…letting the season dictate your colors. Just because you are having a fall wedding doesn’t mean you have to do orange. Look at this lovely November wedding with pale pink accents, so pretty! Photo credit: Marc Anthony Photography

9. Not trusting your professionals.

Most of our brides come in needing some guidance on what flowers to select, proclaiming they know nothing about flowers. We are happy to offer up some great ideas! However, some brides come in with exact recipes for us to follow. I always think it is best to ask the professional what they would recommend to achieve the best end product, I always do this to my contractor, hair dresser, etc and I have total faith in them! Allow the professional to do their thing, sit back, relax and be pleasantly surprised!

We love when brides say “I trust you, make me whatever you want!”. That’s what this bride did and she loved it! Photo credit: Caitlin Scott Photography

8. Thinking you can do it all.

One of my personal goals this year is to delegate more. It is too stressful to do it all, right brides? Ask your mother or mother in law for help with certain tasks, they would love to pitch in! Some of my brides ask me to just send everything to their mom and communicate with her. I think it limits the bride’s back and forth to her mom about the order and since mom is usually cutting the check, everyone thinks it is easier.

7. Keeping the budget a secret.

Ahhhh, the budgeting issues my brides face. I always appreciate when a bride lets me know the budget in mind ahead of time, it helps me guide her toward the best option. No use talking about an all orchid centerpiece if it isn’t in the budget.

6. Making your own centerpieces, there is a right way and a wrong way.

Oh boy, I could really go on about this. We get a lot of phone calls a month before a wedding from a frantic bride now hating her DIY centerpieces. She brings her bags and boxes full of stuff she has purchased from 8 different Michaels stores and pleads for help. The thing is, I often wonder if it was even going to save money since she had to go out and buy all the materials. We have so many rental options, let us carry the cost of purchasing the glassware. Besides, what are you going to do with 30 lanterns after the wedding anyway? If you do decide to do DIY, make sure you think about who is going to set up the centerpieces on the wedding day. We are happy to help out, but will have to charge a labor fee. It really isn’t the responsibility of the reception venue either.

This was one of the cases of “I had an idea but wasn’t sure what to do exactly” so she brought us the grasses and feathers and we did the rest!

5. Waiting too long to book vendors.

I read all the time on blogs and in wedding magazines that you should book your florist 6-9 months before the wedding. For popular months (May-October), we have had many Saturdays completely booked 9 months out. So if you wait to meet with us until 9 months before and then take another month to send in the contract, you might miss out! We book a limited number of events/day, usually a max of 3 (one per sister).

4. Not using seasonal flowers.

Now, this is our job to really guide you toward what looks best and is a good price at certain times of the year. Yes, we can get peonies November, but they are expensive, about 4 times the price of a rose. Same with dahlias, when we push the season (too early or too late) they start to look rough. Lily of the valley exists for about 3 weeks of the year (starting now!).

3. Hiring a cheap photographer.

This has nothing to do with flowers, sorry about that. But we see a lot of wedding photos from our former clients and you can really tell the difference between the inexperienced photographer with a crazy flash (think staged photos inside with awful lighting) and a true professional (see our vendors list for our favs!). Make sure you hire 2 photographers to capture all the details you worked so hard on to pick out, from the pre-wedding brunch to the farewells. It is a shame to see $4000 worth of centerpieces not make it in one photo and we have seen it too many times.

2. Thinking your fiance needs to decide on every detail.

Don’t get us wrong, we love meeting the bride AND the groom so we can do our best to meld both personalities into our designs (and for some reason, the guys love our shop!!). And there are some men who have more of a preference than you would think about the flowers! And then there are the men who just come along to please their bride, which leads to frustration on the bride’s part when he doesn’t chime in during the meeting. The best advice we can give: know your man. If you think he cares about the flowers, please bring him along! If not, enjoy the night with your moms/bridesmaids in tow. You’ll thank me later!

The lovely couple was a great team! He really chimed in and helped her feel great about her choices, so sweet. Photo credit: Tina Jay Photography

and the #1 mistake…..

1. Sweating the small stuff.

You hear this all the time, “don’t sweat the small stuff on the big day” and it is totally true! Surround yourself with positive and capable vendors and you won’t have a thing to worry about! True, every little thing may not turn out as planned (gasp, the pumpkin dahlias are not the exact shade of pumpkin) but what really matters that day is the commitment and love you are proclaiming to all of your friends and family. Nothing can compare to that feeling. Still get chills thinking about that experience on my own wedding day almost 5 years ago (4 years and 11 months ago to be exact). I recall being so anxious about my hair/makeup/dress/jewelry/weather/schedule/everylittlesillydetail until the wedding day came…and on that day I was so happy and excited that I got all dressed and never in looked in the mirror before going to the church! I remember turning to Dawn and asking her if I looked ok 5 minutes before walking down the aisle haha! All of those details were the last thing on my mind as I was about to start my new life with the love of my life. I hope all my brides feel the same way.

Did we miss anything?? What do you think?

There is nothing more I love to see in my inbox than this, “I just wanted to say thank you for an amazing job that you did at Tiffany’s wedding. Everything was beautiful and we are so thankful that we used you to decorate for the wedding!” Well you are welcome Mrs. Samuel! Now we all know MOB’s tell the truth, so that makes me feel pretty awesome.

Tiffany sent us these photos from her wedding day last summer at the Golden Inn in Avalon NJ. Her groom, Dan, is a chef so they wanted to incorporate some culinary details into the centerpieces, but also nod to the beach theme. I think we did a pretty good job melding them both!

The bridal party flowers….

We accented the bridesmaid bouquets with rope and starfish.

Tiffany’s bouquet was wrapped with ivory satin and I made this little garland of starfish.

She loves bright colors, so we just ran with it! Fuchsia phals, purple sweet pea, green bupleurum, green cymbidium orchids, scabiosa stellata and orange spray roses did the trick.

Her adorable flower girl carried this pomander of orange babe spray roses with a twine ribbon.

Her bridal party included a man of honor! And lots of pretty ladies in periwinkle gowns!

The ceremony was held on the beach, just outside the Golden Inn in Avalon. We lined the aisle with carnation pomanders composed of orange, purple and green carns, hung with some beachy rope.

The back row of chairs was accented with our orange sashes and larger starfish tied on with rope, I loved this!

Now, here is the cool stuff. Being a farm girl, I love incorporating veggie into our floral designs. Chef Dan (the groom) encouraged us to use green, orange and purple vegetables with coordinating flowers as the centerpieces. This is what we came up with! See the lettuce in the background? The ceremony pomanders were reused on the long head table as well. A few scattered crystals add glam.

Orange bell peppers + orange roses.

Green zucchini + green celosia.

Purple leaf lettuce + purple carnations.

Accented with kale + crystals.

= LOVE how unique this is!

The up-lighting really added to the room too, totally transformed the look. We hope all the foodies out there loved it too! We are heading back to the Golden Inn in a few weeks, we have a lot of weddings booked there this year and we are thrilled about it. Today is our last day in the office, the rest of the week we will be working in the flower shop and on the road delivering our weddings. Hope you have a great week!

I have been reading Florists’ Review for about 10 years now (yes, while all my friends were reading Vogue, I was reading about flowers!) and my favorite issue has always been the Weddings issue; there are so many creative and impressive ideas out there! For the past 4 years, we have entered the Picture Perfect Weddings Contest, and while we haven’t won (YET) we have gained recognition in other categories every year. This year our work was featured in 2 of the 6 trends spotlights! Dawn and I put a lot of effort into staying ahead of the trends, so that is a great honor to see our work highlighted in this section. Take a look for yourself!

Many thanks to Mirka Photography for providing us with these beautiful photos of Jenna and Mike’s wedding at the Golden Inn in Avalon NJ. Our photo is the middle photo with the greenish dresses. Her stylish bouquets featured yellow dahlias, bupleaurum, craspedia and orchids finished with a tropical monstera leaf.

We kinda swept this category! The “Logging In” trend has been popular here, thanks to our handmade pedestals and votive holders. We used them in Emily and Mike’s wedding at Centerton Country Club in Pittsgrove NJ to showcase our floral pumpkins on her place card table and also in Molly and Rich’s wedding at Running Deer Golf Club for her centerpieces. Many thanks to the amazing Tina Jay Photography for sharing these photos with us!

We are also inspired by other winners in the magazine…I am kinda loving the floral garland roping off the aisle in the “Best Wedding” feature done by Absolutely Flowers in KS. I can do that!

For the “Best Ceremony” category, check out this before and after of the white pergola. That certainly deserved the win! A total transformation! Way to go Beyond the Garden gate florist in Oregon!

Had to include this page showing “Best Reception” at the Bonnet Island Estate on LBI, featuring the work of Colony Florist. We are heading there on Friday to do a walk-thru with a bride and will certainly be using this as inspiration.

As always, thanks to the many photographers that take the time to share their work with us. We couldn’t do it without ya! I wonder what weddings we will send in next year….will it be your wedding?

Our dream becomes a reality! We are happy to introduce our newest (and the most exclusive) rental item: our Lace Canopy. Handmade by our husbands (pretty lucky, right?) and then finished with lace curtains made by our other sister, Sara, this lace canopy is one of a kind. We saw photos of similar ideas online and compiled them all together to create this, what do you think?

The canopy is about 8x8x8 and can be used inside a ballroom to create a romantic wedding ceremony backdrop and then reused over the sweetheart table for an extra “wow” factor. Or set it up outside for the perfect outdoor ceremony location! Introductory rental price is $300 and includes set up. Custom floral decor is extra.

A close up of the ivory lace (Sara and I picked it out on fabric row in Philly, love the damask print!) AND that totallyawesomebeautifulstunning rhinestone curtain tie back. The ribbon color can be changed to match your scheme. Dontcha just love it???!!

We set this up at the Centerton Country Club bridal show last weekend and found some models to pose for us. A lighting company did the purple uplighting, very romantic. We created depth in the canopy with hanging purple dendrobium orchids and flanked the front with our tall silver vases with fresh cut magnolia branches.

Ombre rose petals down the aisle…purple maritime, lavender haze, and blushing akito pink rose petals create the look.

We accented the aisle chairs with our hanging crystal ball and dendrobium orchids, another lovely rental item!

Contact us if you would like to add this to your order! We would love to see some of our 2012 couples get married under this labor of love <3

Happy Friday Flower Fans! It’s Mary this time, I think it is about time to relieve Dawn of some tasks now that I am back to work full time (with Sam at my side!). Our schedules have been delightfully full of client meetings, lots of quotes mixed with lots of Pinterest boards (see some wedding inspiration here folks!), and planning for the Centerton Country Club Spring Bridal Show (don’t forget to register).

This weekend we are honored to be a part of Caitlyn’s wedding, so it got me thinking about another Caitlin we got to know last August. Her wedding reception to Richard was celebrated at Lucien’s Manor in Berlin, NJ, after their church ceremony in Cherry Hill; both full of bright orange, coral, hot pink and green. Caitlin was such a sweet bride, especially when I had to call her a few days before her wedding to let her know that the hot pink dahlias that I ordered came in looking rough. I just didn’t feel comfortable using them because the color was a little off and I couldn’t get a replacement due to short supply, so I called her to ask if we could sub them for hot pink gerbers instead. She happily agreed and let me know how grateful she was that I called to keep her in the loop. I try to run my business how I want other businesses to treat me, and I would certainly want to know about a change to my order and that all options have been explored. So anyway, let’s see how it all turned out!

Caitlin wanted a traditional look with lots of color, so we created a bouquet of pale pink dahlias, movie star coral roses, peach mini gerbers, green hydrangea, orange celosia and stephanotis with rhinestones.

The happy couple, congrats!

I thought this was a pretty way to incorporate flowers into an updo, even though it is a silk orchid, still looks so romantic!

Close up of a bout.

The sage green dresses were flattering on everyone and you know I am digging that little flower accent.

I like the printed dresses for the little junior bridesmaids!

The ballroom at Lucien’s was dressed up with 2 centerpiece styles: one tall chic vase with gerbers inside and a mounded arrangement of green dutch hydrangea, gerbers, roses, and gomphrena. Coordinating floral rings with candles adorned the other tables.

Thank you Studio K Photography for sharing the photos and a big thanks to Caitlin for being so understanding! We wish you many many years of happiness…

xoxo, Mary and Dawn

Time to get back to the next Caitlyn’s wedding..the damask print accents are so cute! Good thing Sam likes that carrier sling thing <3

Spring literally feels like it has arrived….and I am so excited. Time for flip flops, playing outside with the kids, and most importantly fresh, seasonal, locally grown flowers. I love when a bride comes to us and requests local, seasonal flowers. Especially a bride that is wide open on colors and flower selection. Last July, Trish got married on her family farm near Daretown, and she wanted her flowers to feature hydrangea and whatever we could get out hands on. We have a couple of local cut flower suppliers in Millville and Pittsgrove that we like to use. There is nothing better then being able to see the flowers first hand, knowing they were just cut, and using them to create gorgeous wedding flowers. Gary Johnson did a fantastic job with the pictures and we are excited to show off this country wedding. A country wedding is always near and dear to my heart, because Mary and I grew up in the country (I wonder how many people actually know where Sharptown is?). This wedding was full of cute, personal, details that were perfect for this couple.

The bride carried a bouquet of blue hydrangea (cut from Mary’s yard), limelight hydrangea, coneflowers, dahlias, scabiosa, and gomphrena (all from a local cut flower supplier).

We lined the aisle with hanging mason jars filled with hydrangea.

Guests sat on hay bales covered with borrowed quilts (so cute!). To form a ceremony area the bride and groom stood in front of this old door, which we flanked with our wooden pedestals with jars of hydrangea. A hydrangea wreath also accented the door.

A photo opportunity was created in another area with an additional door placed in front of a cornfield. We added hanging candles from tall shepherds hooks. This was the ideal place for guests to pose for a picture after the wedding.

The reception took place under a tent. We used glassware that the bride and her family provided and filled it with fun, seasonal flowers. Votives in mason jars added to the look.

We had a lot of fun with this wedding and hope to do lots more weddings using locally grown flowers. We are really excited about the upcoming year and the number of brides that have contacted us. We have a goal of blogging at least once a week, even through the busy season, so we will be sharing as many weddings with you all as we possibly can.

Mary and I have been keeping busy these last few weeks (soooo glad she is back to work, with baby Sam at her side of course!). We are going to be participating in Centerton Country Club & Event Center’s Bridal Show on March 25th and are hoping to meet lots of new brides that day. The show is from noon until 4pm and is FREE! There is going to be tons of vendors, and you can register to attend easily HERE. We also recently hosted a DIY party as part of a fun ladies night out. The wedding I want to share today was a DIY wedding. The bride and her family and bridesmaid came into our studio a few days before the wedding and they made all the bouquets and centerpieces, with a little guidance from Mary and I. They did a fantastic job! Tami Melissa shared these gorgeous photos with us (we are working with her on a wedding this weekend at One Atlantic too; can’t wait to see those photos!).

Cassie carried a bouquet of all fuchsia garden roses and peonies.

Cassie had this coin that featured her father’s profile that we attached in memory of him. I love that she found such a unique way to remember him on her wedding day. We also wrapped her bouquet with an embroidered handkerchief.

Rob wore a bout of fuchsia asters.

The bridesmaids wore long blue gowns and carried bouquets of garden roses and asters (all made by them!).

Instead of a place card table, Cassie used our shutter screen. We accented the screen by hanging pictures, that Cassie provided, and bud vases of flowers.

The reception was held at Running Deer and as usual they did an amazing job. We used our pink mercury glass filled with white flowers including hydrangea, football mums, and stock.

The Sweet Life Bakery designed this gorgeous cake which was accented with garden roses, stock, and football mums.

The bridesmaid bouquets were placed on the cake table with votive candles. Running Deer really is such a gorgeous venue!

We loved working with Cassie and her family and bridesmaids on designing these wedding flowers. They were such a fun group. Thanks Cassie and Rob for letting us be a part of your wedding day, xoxo!

Mary and I are so excited about some new changes going on over here. We are having new floors put in the flower shop (no more concrete!), they should finish up today. Then we are going to reorganize our consultation area. There is something to be said for getting everything set just right. I love when brides come in to our shop and are so surprised at what they find. Yes, we are located in the middle of a field, but we still want it to be fab! Speaking of fab, I am excited to share this winter wedding with everyone. I love winter weddings. This past December we did a gorgeous wedding at The Philadelphia Racquet Club. Thomas W. Lunt Photography shared these amazing photos with us. I loved Kiera’s color scheme; the dark red and purple looked so striking.

The bridesmaids carried bouquets of dark red roses, purple stock, purple lisianthus, and touches of cedar. We accented the roses with crystal pins.

Kiera’s bouquet was white peonies, dark red garden roses, purple stock, purple lisianthus, and a collar of cedar. We added diamond pins to the roses.

The pretty little flower girl wore a crown of red spray roses and carried a wand of red roses.

At the church we used our large bell vases filled with cranberries. We topped them with arrangements of red garden roses, purple stock, red amaryllis, winter greens, and winterberry branches.

The reception room at The Philadelphia Racquet is so pretty. I loved the blue walls. We wanted to bring a touch of that blue into the centerpieces so we incorporated the blue/purple dendrobium orchids with red amaryllis, purple stock, red roses, winter greens, and winterberry branches.

The arrangements were placed on top of our chic vase, which was filled with cranberries. We also added hanging crystals (we love a touch of bling!).

I loved the amaryllis!

For the other half of the tables we did little arrangements in our Diana candle holder trio.

We accented each of the candle holders with dark purple ribbon and a crystal brooch. We also added our crystal votive holders to each table.

Each napkin was adorned with a spring of winter greens.

We spruced up the gift table with cylinders of amaryllis and roses.

The cake was finished with a ring of red roses and purple lisianthus. We like to leave vases for the bridesmaids bouquets on the cake table. This is the perfect spot for bridesmaids to place their flowers.

Thanks Kiera and Ryan for letting us be a part of your day! We loved every detail of this gorgeous winter wedding!

I hope everyone had an amazing Valentine’s Day last week! I really enjoyed coming up with all sorts of gorgeous floral designs. I don’t think I did one single standard dozen roses in a vase; I am blessed to have customers that really let us be creative with it. The designs coming out of our studio featured phalaenopsis orchids, gloriosa lilies, cymbidium orchids, garden roses, anemone, ranunculus, and more. I loved seeing the designs that were posted on facebook too! We have a few nice weddings coming up this week and we are excited to get back into the swing of wedding work. Tomorrow there is a big flower delivery coming in and I can’t wait to check everything out. We have been staying busy and met lots of amazing brides on February 12th at Running Deer’s Bridal Show. I hope some of those brides check us out on facebook and check out our website and blog. Today I want to blog about a wedding that took place last June on a private property in Alloway, NJ. I especially enjoyed this wedding. I graduated with the bride and I really enjoyed coming up with unique weddings flowers for her wedding. Liz is such a sweet person and working with her was a joy. Gary Johnson did an awesome job with the photos and I am excited to share them with you all.

For Liz’s bouquet we used lavender, green celosia, green hydrangea, bupluerum, blue thistle and peacock feather accents.

We wrapped the stems with teal ribbon with a champagne lace overlay. Her dress was a gorgeous vintage inspired lace gown and I love how the lace on her bouquet coordinated with her gown.

The bridesmaids carried bouquets with pops of magenta. I love their champagne gowns!

To line the aisle we used our shepherd’s hooks to hang these lovely copper lanterns from.

We decorated the pergola with hanging blue vases filled with green hydrangeas.

I loved this bout, celosia and a peacock feather wrapped with moss twine.

Her centerpieces were seriously so cute and so creative. On half of the tables we planted assorted ferns into blue glassware and clustered them on moss mats on the tables. Liz had these chalkboard table number signs that we added. After the wedding she took all these ferns and potted them up. What a great remembrance of her wedding day!

For the other half of the tables we used assorted blue glassware filled with dianthus green trick. celosia, green spider mums, chocolate cosmos, and peacock feathers on a moss mat.

I really loved being a part of this wedding and had so much fun with it. Best wishes Liz and Michael; I hope you enjoy those ferns for many years!
